Candling Your Mugo Pine

1.6.2023 | 21:28

This is an important spring task that must be done before the end of June.

What is a candle on a mugo pine?  It is the slender, straight shoot of new growth that appears in the springtime.

It is hard to believe, but the amount your mugo pine will grow in one season is contained in these slender candles.  By snapping them in half, gardeners can encourage the bush to become thicker.

If the mugo pine is entering spring and looking a little patchy, leave the longer candles, and just trim the smaller ones.  This will help the mugo pine fill in.

Candling is a very relaxing task; you’ll be amazed at how many candles even a smaller mugo pine has, and you will be surprised in coming years at how this yearly June task makes a much more beautiful and profuse mugo pine!

Come on, Compost!

17.5.2023 | 23:20

Gardeners, we all know that value of compost in our soil.

It makes healthy soil by :

          providing extra nutrients

          aeration

improves the structure of the soil

         helps to retain moisture

adds beneficial organisms to our soil.

And most important, it is free, using organic scraps that we would otherwise just throw away!

Use peels, tops, leaves, eggshells, coffee grounds.

DO NOT use any meat items or dairy items.
