Fresh Cucumbers for Easter

12.4.2021 | 16:50

Fresh Cucumbers for Easter by Vicky and John:

The seed we used was Corentine (used to be called cool breeze), planted in a pot (8”) and kept on our south facing window,  and watered twice a day.  Approximately 45 days to eating stage.

John built a little trellis for them to climb, as normally they would be spreading.

That variety of cucumber is very productive and our plant has many more that we can pick in a few days.

Pomanders

4.12.2020 | 15:09

How to make Pomanders:

Pomanders are beautiful and fragrant accents that are pretty for the holiday season, to have in a bowl on your holiday table, or to hang with ribbon on your tree!  Long ago, they were believed to bring good fortune!

You will need:

oranges with firm skins ( Christmas oranges are too soft)

whole cloves

a small nail or toothpick

You can either make a design of lines from top to bottom of the orange, spirals, stars, or rows.  Poke a small hole in the orange and place the clove stem in the hole.  Continue  until you have completed your design.

If you will want to hang your pomander, crisscross ribbon across the orange like a sling, and tie a knot at the top to keep it in place.

AUTUMN GARDEN CHECK-LIST

13.10.2020 | 10:16

AUTUMN GARDEN CHECK-LIST OF THINGS TO DO

** Remove this year’s annual plants.  Throw any diseased plants or leaves into the garbage.

** Rake up debris from garden site and pull any weeds.

** Trim down perennials that do not have seed heads, but  leave perennials with

seed heads intact as these may provide winter food for birds or interest in

      the winter garden.

** Give newly planted cedars and shrubs a good drink of water before freeze-up.

** Be sure that any new perennials or bulbs are clearly marked.

** Clean and store garden implements and garden ornaments.

** Roll up and store garden hoses.

** Empty any water storage containers.

** Put clay pots into shed or garage; if they get wet and freeze they may crack.

** Empty and stack plastic containers.

** Leave some leaves in between shrubs or perennials to act as winter protection

for the plants, and also winter homes for beneficial insects.
