Seed Library

Attention members of the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society!
Garden clean-up is around the corner, so please be on the lookout for seeds to save and share!
if you recall, we are partnering with the Yorkton Public Library to begin a Seed Library, so please keep this in mind as your are cleaning your garden. If you can save some seeds along the way, you’ll be ready for this project in October or November.
The Seed Library is a free program to encourage gardening and local food production. The library would offer seeds and education through this gardening program. By saving seeds, we are helping to preserve heirloom varieties and protect biodiversity in our food crops. Borrowing seeds from the seed library will also allow interested gardeners to experiment by growing new varieties of plants.
Here’s how it works:
In October or November, the Seed Library will be open for us to drop off our saved seeds. Seeds can be seeds that we have saved or purchased. They must be:
dry and no more than two years old
heirloom or organic ( no hybrids)
from fruits, flowers, vegetables or herbs
For large seeds, put a pinch of seeds in an envelope.
For smaller seeds, put two pinches in the envelope.
Label the envelope with the name, variety, and growing instructions.
Then in February, the Seed Library will open for borrowing, operating on the honor system,
with gardeners being allowed to take up to six packages (one pack variety limit)
This will be an excellent way to promote seed saving, the Yorkton Public Library, and the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society!
SO PLEASE SAVE SOME SEEDS FOR THIS INTERESTING NEW PROJECT!
