A Community Garden is Being Re-established in Yorkton
In response to community interest, a community garden is being re-established on the property of the Yorkton Alliance Church in Yorkton (186 Allanbrooke Drive).
A community garden is a shared space where a community of people come together to garden. Community gardens provide gardeners with the opportunity to become engaged in a healthy recreation activity while growing nutritious food, meeting neighbours, building community, beautifying open spaces and learning about the life cycle of organisms.
From their own experience community gardeners have said that a few of the benefits they have received from being involved in their community have been:
1. Food is produced that is nutritious and tastes wonderful.
2. Health is improved – physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.
3. Green space is created that everyone can enjoy.
4. A culture of respect and learning is also grown.
5. People can acquire gardening expertise and self-confidence.
Individuals/families who become involved in the Community Peace Garden will collectively create their own community garden, share their experience and knowledge and celebrate their achievements. The possibilities are limited only by their creative imagination.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a community of people interested in gardening and committed to growing vegetables.
An informational meeting for interested individuals will be held on May 10th at the Yorkton Alliance Church starting at 7:00 p.m. Application forms for individual community garden plots will be available at the meeting. Gardeners will not have to pay a fee for a garden plot.
