Yorkton and District Horticultural Society

An intrepid group of members of the Yorkton and District Horticultural Society made a road trip to Riding Mountain National Park to see the beautiful gardens at Clear Lake.

We were very lucky to have renowned garden author Lyndon Penner as our tour guide through the gardens.  Lyndon is an author of great gardening books, perfect for prairie gardeners, and is also an environmentalist, garden designer, and public speaker.  He gave us a most informative and entertaining tour of the amazing gardens around Clear Lake.

We learned about the challenges of creating the gardens (late seasons, resident deer, and sadly reduced staff and funding from years ago), but the gardens were just beautiful and certainly an inspiration to us all.  There were long perennial borders, an English garden, and a stunning herbal garden planted to deter the deer.

The day was just great: nice weather, wonderful tours, stunning gardens, and even a cheerful topiary moose that had quite an attitude!

The town site was bustling with people enjoying walking, talking, and stops at the many and varied eateries and unique shops.  What a delightful day!

Thank you to John for organizing our trip for us, and kindly sharing their beautiful cottage for our lunch break!  It was all lovely, John, thank you so much!  Thank you to all the members who came on this adventure, your enthusiasm was wonderful to share.
